DOLTON | Dolton West Elementary District 148 will soon have hundreds of additional laptop computers available to its junior high school students and an online tool for district parents/guardians to access information about their child’s grades, attendance and more.

The School Board has approved the purchase of 800 Lenovo S205s Notebook Computers. The laptop purchases are being funded by a federal Title 1 grant.

The computers will be housed in the school system’s three junior high buildings and will give all junior high students access to a portable computer in each of their classrooms.

Students are expected to be able to begin using the new computers when classes resume after winter break, according to Director of Technology Karen Marshall.

“We are thrilled about bringing more technology into our classrooms. Our schools have SMART Boards and computer labs and now we can put laptops in the hands of each of our junior high students,” said Superintendent Jayne E. Purcell. “I thank our School Board for having the foresight to extend this opportunity to our students and kudos to our Technology Department for putting it all in place.”

Along with more technology for students, the district also will soon provide parents with access to information about their child’s academic progress.

The Parent Portal is expected to debut in January, enabling parents and guardians to view their youngster’s grades, attendance, and demographic information from any computer with an Internet connection.

Purcell said she hopes the Parent Portal instrument will help increase parental involvement in their children’s education.
