CHICAGO | A former furniture delivery man from Dolton has been sentenced to 25 years in prison in connection with the home invasion and armed robbery of a pregnant customer, according to a news release from the Cook County state's attorney's office.
Judge William Lacy sentenced Darren Remmer, 40, on Tuesday to 25 years in prison. A jury convicted Remmer in December of home invasion and armed robbery.
On May 12, 2011, Remmer was working for a Dolton furniture store when he delivered children's furniture to a customer in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood, the release states. While setting up the furniture, Remmer told the pregnant customer some screws were missing and he would return with them and finish the job
When he returned a few days later, Remmer told the woman he had the screws and began fixing the furniture but then approached the woman with a box cutter, demanding jewelry, according to the release. When she told him she didn't have jewelry, he demanded she give him a safe in the house. She complied and Remmer left the house with the safe.
State's attorneys later learned that Remmer had been fired from the furniture store the day after his first visit to the victim's home.
The Chicago Police Department investigated the crime.
