DOLTON | Authorities are investigating the reported abduction of a Hammond high school student who says she was taken across the state line to a south suburban motel and raped.
Dolton police Cmdr. Harry Blanundiur said Thursday officers were searching for one or more suspects involved in a sexual assault of the 16-year-old girl that occurred Monday afternoon at the Best Motel & Suites, 1335 E. Sibley Blvd.
Dolton police are working with police in Hammond, which is where the incident is believed to have begun.
Police said the girl, a student at Gavit High School, was walking home from school about 3:30 p.m. Monday. The girl's mother said two cars pulled up next to the girl and she was abducted in the area near a gasoline station at Columbia Avenue and 175th Street. Police could not confirm the mother's description of the incident but confirmed where the girl was abducted and taken to Dolton.
Blanundiur said the suspects ultimately drove west across the state line and into Dolton, where they wound up at the motel.
Eventually, the males let the girl go. She spent part of Tuesday at The Community Hospital in Munster.
The girl’s mother said she took her to Dolton police Wednesday and police confirmed the girl identified one male in a police lineup as one of her attackers.
The mother said five males attacked her daughter, but Blanundiur said police only had the confirmation of one person and were trying to figure out Thursday exactly how many people were involved in the incident.
As of Thursday afternoon, no charges had been filed against anyone in connection with the sexual assault and no one was in custody.
The mother said the girl has not attended school since the attack.
