DOLTON | Illinois State Police continue investigating how a Chicago woman fell from a moving SUV on the Bishop Ford Freeway near Dolton early Tuesday morning before being struck and killed by a semi.

Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the SUV's driver, who was not identified, was in police custody Tuesday afternoon but was not cooperating with officers. No charges had been filed.

According to Master Sgt. Jason LoCoco, at 12:45 a.m., an SUV was traveling south on the Bishop Ford at 154th Street when passenger Jennifer Mitchell, 27, of Chicago, was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the road. The driver of the SUV drove away, LoCoco said.

Mitchell then was struck and killed by a passing semi.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Bond said a witness told police Mitchell was seen falling out of the vehicle, but it wasn't clear Tuesday if she was pushed or jumped.

The driver, a 28-year-old Chicago man, was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with nonlife-threatening injuries, LoCoco said.

The investigation prompted the closure of all southbound lanes on the Bishop Ford from Sibley Boulevard to 159th Street for five hours.

LoCoco said shortly after Mitchell was killed, troopers spotted the SUV she was traveling in on northbound Interstate 294. The SUV crashed near the Alsip exit as officers tried to pull over the driver.
