DOLTON | The boyfriend of a pregnant teen who was fatally shot last week and his brother remained in jail Sunday.
Anthony Lee, 16, and Diante Coakley, 21, face first-degree murder charges in the death of Eva Casara, 17, officials said. Dolton police said Lee was Casara's boyfriend and the father of their infant, who survived.
Dolton Police Chief John Franklin said Saturday night during a news conference that police were seeking a third unidentified suspect.
NBC 5 reports that prosecutors in the case said Lee, Coakley and another brother went with Casara to 153nd Street and Dorchester Avenue on Christmas Day. They planned to rob someone who Casara had arranged to meet.
However, police said the robbery somehow went wrong.
Prosecutors said Casara and Coakley got into the back seat of a car, but someone in the car told Coakley to get out, NBC 5 reports. Coakley got out of the car and went to the driver's side door.
Coakley began shooting at the car, prosecutors say, as the driver drove away with Casara still in the back seat, NBC 5 reports. It was then that Casara was hit in the back of the head, police said.
The people in the car didn't initially realize Casara was in the back of the car or that she had been shot until the people in the car heard "gurgling sounds," NBC 5 reports. The driver pulled Casara out of the car and then drove to Hammond, prosecutors said.
According to media reports, Lee and Coakley went to look for Casara in Gary after the shooting.
Casara was found at 7:43 p.m. Wednesday on the ground in the alley at 152nd Street and Greenwood Road, officials said. She died at 10:57 a.m. Thursday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, the Cook County medical examiner's office said.
Doctors were able to save the baby, Lailani Paris Casara. Family members said the baby took a turn for the worse Saturday. No further information on the baby was available Sunday.
