MARKHAM | Three young males learned Friday they have been indicted by a grand jury on various charges related to a crime spree that included the shooting death of a Dolton man outside his garage.
Darrell Leverson, 19, of Dolton; Kevin Eason, 16, of Riverdale; and Eddie L. Fleming, 20, of Dolton, appeared in court before Associate Judge Darron E. Bowden, where they were told of the indictment that supersedes their scheduled preliminary hearing.
All three will appear in court again on Nov. 28 for arraignment, at which time they will enter their pleas and be assigned a trial judge.
Andrew Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office, said all three have been charged with murder, while Leverson and Eason also face charges of armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, aggravated vehicular hijacking and attempted vehicular hijacking.
Fleming faces a charge of attempted armed robbery for a separate incident, Conklin said.
Leverson and Fleming appeared in court together, while Eason’s hearing was held later in the morning because he is a juvenile — even though in this case he has been charged as an adult. All are being held at the Cook County Jail without bail while their criminal cases are pending.
The three are facing criminal charges for a string of incidents that include the Oct. 9 shooting death of 52-year-old Derrick Hampton in the 1000 block of Blouin Drive in Dolton.
Authorities said Leverson and Eason confronted Hampton outside his garage and demanded money or other valuables. Hampton refused and told the two they would have to shoot him to get by him.
Prosecutors have not specified who fired the fatal shots. But they said the two are suspects, along with Fleming, in a string of crimes, and allegedly had just robbed another man of a leather jacket, a video game and cash in the same block shortly before confronting Hampton.
The three were arrested last month following a police chase that stretched from Chicago’s Brainard neighborhood to 144th and Halsted streets in Riverdale, where their car crashed. Chicago police have said the three committed a robbery in which a wallet and cellphone were stolen.
