Area police reported few problems on the roads overnight and early Friday morning after snow fell across the region.

Driving became more difficult as the morning commute kicked into full swing, with more cars on the road. Snow may turn to freezing drizzle and light freezing rain this morning.

Indiana State Police for the Lowell District and the Toll Road reported a few slide offs and spin outs overnight and early Friday but responded to no major accidents, troopers said.

The slipping and sliding picked up around 7 a.m. as the morning rush kicked in with more vehicles on the expressways, police said.

Snow was blowing across portions of the Toll Road early Friday, creating some isolated areas of low visibility, troopers said. Some slide off and spin out crashes began on the Toll Road around 6:30 a.m. but were mostly restricted to Elkhart and St. Joseph counties, according to troopers.

Lake County police dispatchers said Cline Avenue was icy and slick, but highway crews worked to keep it clear and treated.

Rural roads in the southern Lake County were also slick and covered with blowing snow, dispatchers said.

Cook, Will, Lake and Porter counties remain under a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. The winter weather advisory for Benton, Newton and Jasper counties is set to expire at noon and at 11 a.m. in LaPorte County.

Ben Deubelbeiss, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Ill. said as of 5:30 a.m., most of the region was reporting 3 to 4 inches of snow.

The snow could change over to freezing rain and drizzle over by mid-morning, Deubelbeiss said, and could create a light coating of ice atop already snow-covered roads and sidewalks.

A few light snow showers and flurries will linger into Saturday, with highs around 30 degrees, he said.

The snow forced school closures and delays for a few area schools. A full list is available at www.nwi.com/closings.
