Mark Twain wrote, "If you don't like the weather in Chicago, wait a minute."
Today's forecast proves Twain's point, with forecasters expecting about 30 minutes of sleet before 6 a.m., followed by rain with the possibility of freezing rain, all rain, then snow by late tonight throughout the region.
Andrew Krein, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Ill., said the precipitation will develop as a mix of rain, sleet and patchy freezing rain before 6 a.m. before changing to all rain.
The chance for some areas of light freezing rain will remain until around 9 a.m., Krein said. Surface temperatures are between 32 and 35 degrees, but will dip below the freezing mark in scattered areas, creating icy patches on sidewalks and pavement.
Around 6 or 7 p.m., the rain will transition to a rain-snow mix before changing to all snow around 9 p.m., Krein said.
The snow won't stick around long either, he said, leaving only about half an inch of accumulation throughout the region.
