The National Weather Service is warning of strong rip currents at Lake Michigan beaches in Cook and Lake counties through Thursday night.

A beach hazards statement issued Thursday morning said moderate northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph will feed waves of 3 to 6 feet, creating strong rip and structural currents and dangerous swimming conditions.

Winds and waves were expected to gradually taper during the afternoon.

Forecasters are urging beach-goers to stay out of the water.
