CHICAGO | Markham’s former deputy police chief was arrested Thursday on a federal charge of aggravated sexual abuse.
The federal charge stems from an incident in which Tony D. DeBois, 41, of Matteson, was acting in his official capacity as Markham deputy chief, stated a U.S. Department of Justice news release.
FBI agents arrested DeBois at his home without incident Thursday morning, and he was scheduled to appear later that day before U.S. District Magistrate Judge Sidney L. Schenkier on the single-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury on Wednesday.
The indictment alleges that on Sept. 23, 2010, “DeBois violated the victim’s right to bodily integrity by acts that included aggravated sexual abuse,” as protected by the 14th Amendment.
The felony civil rights violation carries a maximum penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to federal authorities.
DeBois served as the Markham Police Department’s deputy chief between 2008 and approximately 2011. He was the department’s head of internal affairs between 2007 and 2011, and subsequently became Markham’s inspector general last year. He is also a former Chicago Housing Authority and Harvey police officer.
The Markham Police Department did not return a call seeking comment.
