GLENWOOD | The Brookwood Elementary District 167 School Board will hold a special meeting in the Brookwood Junior High School gym Monday to discuss its finances.
Superintendent Valorie Moore will explain to residents the budget challenges facing the district. Budget presentations will be given by Bloom Township School Treasurer Rob Grossi and D.167 Business Manager Andrew Ziegler.
The public will have a chance to comment and ask questions of officials. The board will make suggestions for cutting the budget.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and residents and stakeholders can attend. Brookwood Junior High School is located at 201 East Glenwood-Lansing Road.
Grossi gave a presentation on the district's financial future at the February board meeting. In it, he said D.167 is more vulneralbe to the state's budget woes because it receives such a high percentage of its funding from Springfield.
A bigger piece of District 167's revenue — about 33 percent — comes from the state than many other districts around Illinois, Grossi said. Only about 51 percent comes from real estate taxes, he said.
Illinois' financial issues will prevent any significant increase in education spending in the near future, Grossi said.
Grossi forecasted the district to run increasing deficits each of the next five years with an estimated 2018 deficit to total just under $1 million.
