GLENWOOD | Glenwood Police Chief Demitrous Cook is warning residents to be alert after six air conditioning units were stolen last week from an apartment complex in the 600 block of Glenwood-Lansing Road.

"First, (residents) should be aware of strangers in their neighborhood," Cook said. "And if they see someone that looks suspicious, dial 9-1-1."

No arrests have been made in connection with the thefts.

"The thief is cutting the cabling and the wires with bolt cutters and just picking the unit up and leaving the area with it," Cook said.

In other village news:

• Finance Director Linda Brunette said on Tuesday that Glenwood's 2013 property tax levy ordinance will be presented for approval at the Dec. 18 Village Board meeting. The ordinance will ask for a 1.5 percent increase in property taxes over last year's levy.

• The Glenwood Fire Department will conduct its annual food, toy and clothing drive on Dec. 15. Nonperishable food and new toys and clothing should be placed at the base of residents' driveways by 9 a.m. for pick-up.

"We'll hit all the neighborhoods simultaneously," Fire Chief Kevin Welsh said.

Items collected will first go to Glenwood residents in need, and the surplus will go to local agencies, Welsh said.

• Glenwood Park Programs is sponsoring a Christmas in the Park event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Callahan-Strand Park, located across from the John H. Blakey Senior Center at 1 S. Rebecca St. There will be activities and games, and Santa Claus will be available for pictures.

Cookies and hot chocolate will be served at the senior center.

Those who bring a nonperishable food item will be entered into a drawing to win a prize.
