GLENWOOD | As an act of interstate goodwill, the village has donated a surplus firetruck to the city of Gary.

Glenwood Village President Kerry Durkin said the 32-year-old pumper had been on loan to the city since July, when Glenwood answered a request from Gary for a spare or surplus truck to replace a broken one.

Durkin said Gary had since inquired about purchasing the truck, which he said has a value of less than $5,000.

"So the (Village) Board decided to donate the truck to Gary," Durkin said.

He said he wanted to avoid a situation that occurred last year when the village scrapped an old firetruck since it was able to receive more money that way than it would have by accepting bids for it.

"Why would you scrap something that someone else is using as their first line of defense for public safety?," Durkin said.

Glenwood Fire Chief Kevin Welsh said Gary already had the necessary equipment to put on the truck, but just needed the vehicle.

"It's still a good running machine," Welsh said. "There's no sense in decommissioning it."

At Tuesday's Village Board meeting, Durkin read a letter from Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson thanking Glenwood for its partnership and use of the truck and said its donation would help the city's Fire Department better serve its residents.

In other village news, Trustee Tony Plott said a Minority Contractor's Forum sponsored by the village and held March 2 at the Glenwoodie Golf Course was well-attended.

"When we have construction in town, we want to make sure there's no complaints as to minority business inclusion," Plott said. "We wanted to communicate with some minority contractors to see what the village could do to lessen the barriers or to have more of a communication between the village and minority contractors and subcontractors."
