COOK COUNTY | The Cook County Sheriff's Gun Suppression Team confiscated its 200th illegally owned gun Friday in Harvey.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Sheriff Tom Dart said an AA Arms AP Tec-9 was recovered Friday afternoon near 155th Street and Western Avenue in Harvey. The seizure was the result of a tip.
A Colt .38 Special, the 199th weapon seized by the team, also was found at the Harvey location.
"That this small team has recovered 200 guns from revoked FOID card holders in just six months speaks to the pervasiveness of the problem in Cook County and the brokenness of the FOID system in general," Dart said in the statement.
Dart created the unit in February in an effort to seize firearms from people with revoked Firearm Owners Identification cards who have failed or refused to turn in their cards and weapons to Illinois State Police.
Some 4,000 revoked FOID card holders remain in Cook County, Dart said in the statement. They are restricted from buying a firearm at a federally licensed firearms dealer but may still buy ammunition since background checks are not conducted for those purchases.
"Some of these people are sitting on arsenals, and the old way of nicely asking for nothing more than their (revoked) cards has proven to be ineffectual," Dart said. "It is critical to get these weapons out of their hands before they do harm to themselves or others."
Of the 200 confiscated guns, 35 were seized from one man who had his FOID card revoked for mental health reasons. The team also has collected 195 revoked FOID cards.
