Better Breathers Club

The Ingalls Better Breathers Club is a free support group that offers valuable education on a wide variety of topics relating to lung disease and lung health by experts in the field. The group is intended for both patients and their families. Better Breathers meets the second Tuesday of the month at the Ingalls Family Care Center, 19550 Governors Highway, Suite 2400, in Flossmoor. The next meeting is  Aug. 13.

Balance screening

Feeling unsteady? Dizzy? Is your balance just not what it used to be? Come for a free balance screening from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, 8125 W. 171st St. in Tinley Park. Standardized assessments will be performed by an Ingalls vestibular/balance physical therapist to assess your risk for falls during your daily activities.

Breast cancer support group

The Ingalls Breast Cancer Support Group will hold its next meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Richard K. Desser, M.D., Comprehensive Breast Center at Ingalls Family Care Center at 6701 W. 159th St. in Tinley Park.

Center Steppers at mall

Join the Ingalls Center Steppers Mall Walkers Club at River Oaks Mall for free monthly health lectures. The next meeting is from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Aug. 20 and will focus on fall prevention. Come early for free blood pressure screenings between 8 and 10 a.m. Center Steppers meets at River Oaks Mall, 96 River Oaks Center Drive in Calumet City, near the food court.

Diabetes education

Approximately 17.9 million people have diabetes; 5.7 million people are undiagnosed, and 57 million people have pre-diabetes. Both can be serious, but both can be controlled. What’s more, pre-diabetes can be reversed. Learn about diabetes and how to control it by attending a free educational seminar from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 26 at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, at 8125 W. 171st St. in Tinley Park. This free seminar will feature a comprehensive presentation by Ingalls certified diabetes educator Lisa Szafranowski.

Grief support group

Ingalls Bereavement Services sponsors a free Grief Support Group at 2 p.m. every Monday at Ingalls Memorial Hospital. The group provides a safe place for participants who have experienced the loss of a loved one to grieve with others who have had similar experiences, share feelings and start the healing process. The group meets in the North Building, second floor, at the main hospital campus, 1 Ingalls Drive in Harvey.

Straight Talk – grief support

When it comes to grief, men deal with it differently than women. That’s why Ingalls Health System offers the monthly grief support group Straight Talk for men who have experienced the loss of a spouse or significant other.

The free support group, which meets the third Wednesday of every month, will be hosting its next meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21. Meetings are held on the hospice unit in the North Building at the main hospital campus, at 1 Ingalls Drive in Harvey.

Maternity suites tours

Expectant parents are invited to tour the maternity suites of Ingalls Memorial Hospital, 1 Ingalls Drive in Harvey, and see the advantages of delivering their baby in a state-of-the-art birthing suite. Labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care all occur in the same room, allowing new parents to fully enjoy those first moments with their new baby.

The Maternity Suites Tour includes helpful information about Ingalls' admission procedures, including pre-admission forms and VIP valet parking passes, how to select a pediatrician, the role of doulas and more.

The free tours are offered from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays. The next session is Aug. 21.

Join Ingalls for a free discussion of the latest research and treatments for macular degeneration and low vision from 10 to 11 a.m. Aug. 28 at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center, at 8125 W. 171st St. in Tinley Park. Information will also be available on where to find low-vision assistance.

Square Striders at mall

Join the Ingalls Square Striders Walkers Club at Orland Square Mall for free monthly health lectures. The next meeting from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Aug. 16, will feature a comprehensive overview of sleep disorders, causes and treatment options. The half-hour presentation begins at 9 a.m. Come early for free blood pressure screenings between 8 and 10.

Square Striders meets at Orland Square Mall, 288 Orland Square Drive, in Orland Park, on the lower level near Carson’s. Enter on the lower level, Sears.

Weight management

An introductory session of Ingalls Wellness Center's Healthy Lifestyles Weight Management program will be offered at 9 a.m. or 6 p.m. Aug. 22. The full 12-week session fee is $225. The program is designed for adults who want to lose weight, improve their overall health and increase physical activity. Weekly group classes are led by a registered dietitian. 

Classes from either 9 to 10:30 a.m. or 6 to 7:30 p.m. are on consecutive Thursdays, beginning Aug. 29 and ending Nov. 14, For more information or to register, call Ingalls Wellness Center at (708) 915-8850.
