HARVEY | A 21-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing into a tree following a police chase, authorites said.

The unidentified man was stopped at a Cook County Sheriff's Office check point at 145th Street and Lincoln Avenue in Harvey, said Ben Breit, spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office. The man drove off and led police on a chase.

The chase ended about a block away from the check point when the man crashed into a tree, Breit said. The man was extricated from the vehicle by the Harvey Fire Department.

He was in critical condition late Wednesday, Breit said.

The 21-year-old was the only person in the car, and there were no other reported injuries. A submachine gun was found in his vehicle.
