HOMEWOOD | The Village Board has adopted an ordinance that clarifies a previously approved rule allowing a maximum of six hens to be raised on residential property.

Homewood Village President Rich Hofeld said the new ordinance requires that chickens be kept in a rear yard and at least three feet from any property line.

"(Chickens) shall be at least 30 feet from any residential structure," Hofeld said.

He said chicken coops must be made of at least 19-gauge wire.

The ordinance approved last month states that chickens raised on residential property cannot be slaughtered nor raised for commercial purposes.
