“More, Much More, Than Fiddlers on the Roof !” is a special multimedia program at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 that will survey and illuminate significant ups and downs, twists and turns of a particular Eastern European community's Jewish residents.

It focuses on the relationships between the Jews and their diverse neighbors, beginning in the mid-1500s to the present. This program is being presented  at B’nai Yehuda Beth Sholom, 1424 W.183rd St. in Homewood.

The evening begins with dessert and beverages at 7 p.m., program at 7:30. The Illiana Jewish Genealogical Society has been awarded a min-grant from the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, enabling it to present this program to the public free of charge.

Brian Zakem, the speaker, weaves aspects of his past and present work as a family genealogist, co-editor of the Ruzhany Memorial Book (English editions, 2012), inter-religious and diversity activist and mental health professional, into this program's rich tapestry.

Four key topics will be presented: The past to present government, political, economic, social and religious benefits and challenges faced by this Eastern European community and surrounding region. Notable similarities and differences between this European community and its widely dispersed family and former residents. Today’s relationship between this Eastern European community and its many former residents. A comparison between this particular Eastern European community (2012) and our own south suburban  today.

The formal part of the presentation will be complimented with various photos, illustrations, references and key maps using Power Point and handouts. Resources listed in the handouts will be useful for a wide array of family ancestry and genealogy projects

Zakem will conclude with a question and answer session and then be available for family genealogy consultation and related topics regarding any issue of Eastern European Jewish history.
