Drivers slid to their destinations during Friday's morning commute, causing police to respond to numerous accidents caused by icy roads.

At 6 a.m., police in all jurisdictions were assisting drivers at numerous, scattered accidents. By 8:30 a.m., police reported the roads were improving and accidents were diminishing.

Indiana State Police said the worst conditions early Friday were near the Broadway exit on the Borman Expressway, northbound Interstate 65 at the ramp to the westbound Borman and between U.S. 231 and the Borman Expressway on I-65.

Troopers patrolling the Indiana Toll Road said the stretch in Lake County was ice-covered before dawn.

Illinois State Police said the Bishop Ford Freeway had accidents from Interstate 80 north to State Street in Chicago.

Police in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties said officers responded to numerous, scattered accidents as well.

No serious injury accidents were reported.

Richard Castro, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville, Ill., said temperatures are expected to hover around the freezing mark throughout the daylight hours.

"Even though we're going to have overcast skies, the March sun should help with keeping things mainly wet," Castro said.

Scattered lake-effect snow showers are likely to continue throughout the day, but no accumulation is expected.

Castro said if the ice-turned-slush does not dry out, it could freeze again overnight, creating a repeat of this morning's icy conditions early Saturday.
