Jessica Newenhouse, 18, was recently chosen as Lansing Rotary Student of the Month.
Presented in March, the award recognized her 3.8 grade point average and extracurricular activities.
“My school counselor chose me and some other students. . . and someone else chose only two students out of that list of about 10,” she said. “I felt very blessed and honored that I was chosen.”
A senior at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, Newenhouse is involved in creating her school newspaper and is a part of the True Star Program, designed to bolster journalism skills.
She participates in the Interrelated Cooperative Education Work Program, receiving college credit while in high school, and also is a member of the Gay Straight Alliance.
Newenhouse will attend Eastern Illinois University after graduation, and plans on possibly pursuing a degree in Special Education. “My ideal career is somewhere I can help children and make a positive difference in someone’s life,” she said.
The daughter of Rob and Patricia Newenhouse, of Lansing, Jessica enjoys watching movies, rock climbing and taking trips to Michigan.
