Alexa Van Beek, 18, is hoping to forge a successful career as a graphic designer.
A senior at Illiana Christian High School in Lansing, she plans to attend Calvin College or Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Mich., to study art and Spanish.
“I have enjoyed looking through magazines over the years and seeing how all the colors and layouts work together to attract the reader’s attention, and I want to be able to do something like that,” she said.
“I would love to work downtown at a big magazine designing the layouts, colors and how all the pages will look. And I have always loved Spanish and really want to become fluent in the language,” she said.
A member of National Honor Society and several athletic teams, Van Beek also sings second soprano in the choir at Illiana. She has performed during the Music in the Parks event at Six Flags Great America, as well as singing Christmas carols at the University Club in Chicago.
“I try to prioritize and manage my time well. I know I have to set limits on how much I can do, so I set aside time for each of the things I need to get done,” she said.
Van Beek has traveled to Cary, Miss. and the Dominican Republic on mission trips during her middle school and high school years .
“In the Dominican Republic, I helped paint the entire school, including putting murals in the classrooms and on the playground walls,” she said.
“I also had the chance to reach out and share the Easter story of Christ and his resurrection to neighborhood kids by having a vacation Bible school.”
“The people in both places were so grateful for even the littlest things we helped them with, and being able to help them was very meaningful and satisfying,” she added.
The daughter of Randy and Ruth Van Beek, of Lansing, Alexa attends the Student Life youth group at Bethel Christian Reformed Church and is a Sunday school leader for kindergartners and first-graders at Faith Church in Dyer.
