Lansing resident Alex Schell has his outstanding grades and athletic ability to thank for his selection as January Student of the Month by the Lansing Rotary Club.
Schell, 18, has received admission letters to five colleges in the past few months and plans to major in sports management, with a minor in business.
His choices so far include North Central College, Eastern Illinois University and Valparaiso University.
“I hope to one day play baseball in the major leagues. Otherwise, I want to work within a college sports program or for a professional sports team,” he said.
The son of Robert and Linda Schell, Alex has played baseball for 10 years and currently pitches, plays outfield and mans third base for Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing.
In addition to serving as team captain for three years, his summer team for ages 16 to 18, the Lansing Redbirds, made it to the Babe Ruth World Series in Weimar, Texas this past summer.
Schell, a senior, maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average and is involved in the pep club.
“I am a member who tries to help out our sports teams and gain more pride within our school. It’s a fun way to meet new people and enjoying the sporting events,” he said.
