LANSING | Book fees are back in Lansing Elementary District 158 for the 2012-13 school year.

After waiving book fees for the 2011-12 school year, the Board of Education on Wednesday voted to charge $30 per student, with a maximum of $75 for families with three or more children. If paid at the time of registration, the cost will be $15 per student, with a maximum of $40.

"I think this is a real good compromise between what we've charged in the past and waiving," said Board Vice President Charles Taylor.

For the 2010-11 school year, the book fee was $75 per student, with a maximum of $200. During registration the fee was $60, with the maximum set at $180.

Board member Jerry Kern cast the lone vote against reinstating a book fee.

"We waived the book fees last year because of the economic conditions families were facing," Kern said. "Those conditions haven't changed."

Board member Robert Bonifazi abstained from voting to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest since he has children in the district.

Board member Anthony Arens said he hoped charging a book fee would encourage people to return books in a reusable condition.

"I think by charging a nominal fee, it instills responsibility," Arens said.

Director of Curriculum Phil Schumaker said most textbooks used in the district cost more than $80 each.

D.158 consists of Coolidge, Oak Glen and Reavis elementary schools, Memorial Junior High School and the Lester Crawl Primary Center.

In other district news, Board Secretary Suzanne Long read a retirement letter submitted by Coolidge second-grade teacher Karen Rentfro and letters of resignation from Memorial Junior High literature teachers Dawn Hindberg and Michelle Kedzierski.
