Businesses throughout Lansing continue to thrive for decades after being founded. Serving the community also means going well behind the boundaries of the village with clients from all over the Chicagoland area, including Northwest Indiana.

Four of those businesses – Lansing Floral Shop, Lansing Heating & Air Conditioning, Mulch Masters and Ted’s Feed Store – illustrate that tradition of family-owned businesses making a hometown mark on the entire area.

LANSING FLORAL SHOP & GREENHOUSE A PLACE OF BEAUTY

Fresh flowers and plants provide the backdrop for beauty and creativity at Lansing Floral & Greenhouse.

Located at 3420 Ridge Road, the shop continues to showcase the talents of brothers Jim and Sherman Mayerak, second-generation florists, and their staff of professional designers after more than 45 years in business.

“We are an FTD® Master Florist, which means a lot. For every 100 florists, there are less than 1% of companies all over the world that have this designation,” says Jim Mayerak.

The FTD® Master Florist Program is an elite program only available to members with "best-in-class" quality and service. To be eligible for the Master Florist designation, Lansing Floral & Greenhouse has to demonstrate a record of fulfilling and delivering FTD orders in a timely manner and with a level of quality consistent with the FTD Quality Star program.

The addition of the 1,000-square foot greenhouse has expanded the business, allowing the Mayeraks and their staff to grow flowers and plants on site.

“We have many different plants as well as hundreds of dish gardens,” he says.

Lansing Floral delivers to 150 cities and towns all over Northwest Indiana, all of Chicago and South Suburbs.

“We specialize in a large inventory of fresh flowers, tropical, plants, European/dish gardens, contemporary and traditional arrangements, high-style floral arrangements, silk arrangements, weddings, funeral designs, gourmet and fruit baskets and candles,” he says.

Special orders are a specialty of Lansing Floral & Greenhouse. Same day service is offered on all orders in by 2 p.m.

“We use locally grown roses that are fresh cut. We deliver to all of Chicago and the Metropolitan area as well as Northwest Indiana. We are committed to offering only the finest floral arrangements and gifts, backed by service that is friendly and prompt,” Mayerak says.

“Because all of our customers are important, our professional staff is dedicated to making your experience a pleasant one. That is why we always go the extra mile to make your floral gift perfect.”

Right now, the staff of seven floral designers are preparing for Sweetest Day on Saturday, Oct. 19.

“We’re also looking forward to Thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine’s Day,” Mayerak says.

Many would think Valentine’s Day is the most popular occasion for giving flowers. However, Mayerak says, Mother’s Day is actually the number one holiday for flowers and plants.

“Everybody has a mother. Not everyone has a Valentine,” he says with a chuckle.

Lansing Floral & Greenhouse is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The shop is closed on Sundays.

TED’S FEED STORE CATERS TO PETS

For the past 65 years, the big red barn at 180th and Burnham Avenue has stood for quality, knowledgeable staff and friendly service.

Originally Ted's Feed Store hatched and sold baby chicks as well as feed and eggs to local farm families. Perched on a feed barrel puffing on his pipe, Ted waited for customers and carried every purchase to their cars.

Ted’s Feed Store remains a family business. Ted’s wife, Annie, and her children and grandchildren continued to grow the business with products to meet the needs of the community. The third generation remains involved in the business, changing the direction of the feed store to focus on pet food and supplies.

“In the years to come, we will continue to serve Lansing with a large selection of pet products, experienced staff and, as always, free carryout service,” says Mary Rhone, store manager.

Bulk seed is still scooped fresh by the pound. Ted's also carries food, treats, toys, cages, bedding, and feeders.

“We are also eager to serve our customers with special orders and we carry a wide variety of all natural quality dog and cat foods,” Rhone says.

“We carry raw food and have three freezers for raw pet food,” she says of the newest trend in pet foods. Ted’s Feed Store now carries three lines of these popular pet meals, each with a frequent buyer program.

One is Pure-Vita from the makers of Nutri-Source premium pet foods. This natural, holistic line of dog food comes in chicken and rice, duck and oatmeal and salmon and potato.

The staff also introduced grain-free food by Canidae, which include beef and ocean fish formulas as well as two grain-free formulas. And, because of the popularity of Innova's Evo Red Meat formula, the staff now offers a red meat diet in their regular Innova line of dog food. It is available in large and small bites.

A selection of birds, bunnies and small animals is also available for sale and add to the enjoyment of shopping at Ted's. Bird services such as wing and nail clipping are available by appointment.

While shopping at Ted's, customers have the opportunity to meet the staff who together has more than 60 years of combined pet and wildlife experience.

Customers appreciate the warm greeting and discussing their pets’ needs with knowledgeable staff. The employees also enjoy assisting customers in selecting products to care for the pets, Rhone says. “Returning customers who are satisfied and enjoying their recent purchases make us feel great!”

Store Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday. For more information, call (708) 474-3000 or go to tedsfeedstore.com.
