LANSING | Village President Norm Abbott joined hundreds of students and their parents on a walk to Lansing schools Wednesday, on International Walk to School Day.
Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day in the USA began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities, according to the website http://www.walkbiketoschool.org/.
In 2000, the event became international when the United Kingdom and Canada and the USA joined together for the first International Walk to School Day. Growing interest in participation all over the world led the International Walk to School Committee to shift its promotion to International Walk to School Month for the entire month of October.
Last year, there were 4,277 Walk to School Day events registered in the United States, according to the website. It has been an annual event in Lansing since 2008.
