LANSING | The board for the Lansing Public Library has given its approval for a $1,993,100 tax levy that is the same as last year, library officials said.

The library’s board of trustees met Oct. 18, at which time trustees approved the tax levy that dictates the library's share of the property tax bills that homeowners will receive next year. The lack of a levy increase means the library district will not be responsible for any increase that may occur in an individual property owner’s tax bill.

Library officials, in a prepared statement, said this is the second consecutive year the library board has not increased its tax levy.

That lack of an increase comes despite the fact the district completed a $1.75 million renovation of the library at 2750 Indiana Ave. during the past year.

“The board recognizes that many taxpayers are struggling in this challenging economic time,” library officials said. “The library will do everything it can to keep costs down while providing a comfortable environment and necessary resources for their patrons.”

Likely to follow a similar lead for Lansing property owners is the Thornton Fractional Township High School District 215, which is likely to approve its tax levy for the upcoming year when the School Board meets Nov. 27.

District officials have said they do not plan to increase the district's tax levy. A public hearing on the proposed levy will take place at 6:45 p.m., just prior to the 7 p.m. School Board meeting, to be held at the district’s Center for Academics and Technology, 1605 Wentworth Ave., in Calumet City.
