LANSING | Fifth-grade students at Oak Glen School in Lansing recently completed the DANGER Program, which stands for Drug, Alcohol, Nicotine, Gang, Education, Resistance.
The nine-week program replaced the previous DARE and GREAT programs led by Officers Michael Manno and Aaron Barnes. The program was designed specifically for the Lansing schools and is taught in all public and private schools in the village.
The DANGER program is taught by Officers Manno and Bill Kowalski, who go into the schools once a week for lessons covering the truth about drugs and gangs, dealing with cultural diversity, how to deal with peer pressure and bullying, learning to resolve anger issues and strengthen refusal skills, decision making, social and family responsibilities and other topics. Prizes are given out for answering review questions at the start of each lesson. After completing the program, students are given a certificate of completion. The program is administered for fifth- and sixth-graders, who also get a DANGER T-shirt.
