LANSING | Oak Glen School students can now learn art and music in a dedicated room, take physical education in a new gym and teachers have a workroom thanks to a $14 million two-phase renovation recently completed at the Lansing elementary school at 2101 182nd St.

Art and music used to be taught from a cart rolled from one class to the next, said Principal Kim Morley. Band was taught in the faculty lounge and enrichment classes were held in the library.

There is now a classroom for English as a Second Language learners and another for the band and gifted students as well as three new fifth-grade classrooms. Superintendent Cecilia Heiberger said the project was completely paid for with capital improvement funds without incurring any debt. The students started using the new classrooms on March 20.

Heiberger praised architects JMA Architects, of South Holland.

"They've done a tremendous job with taking a dream and turning it into a reality," Heiberger said.
