WEST BEND, Wis. | Norm Abbott, of Walter W. Schultz Agency Inc. in Lansing, was recently honored by West Bend Mutual Insurance Co. as the recipient of the W.E. “Mike” Koehler Distinguished Agent of the Year Award, according to a news release from the company. The award recognizes his professional excellence and years of service to his community.

An independent insurance agent since 1967, Abbott is Lansing village president, having just won re-election on Tuesday, and donates his time and resources to many nonprofit and civic organizations, the release states. Before being elected village president in 2009, he served on the Lansing Planning and Zoning Board for 13 years. He also served as a village trustee and public works chairperson from 1997 to 2002 and was elected to trustee again in 2007.

As Lansing village president, Abbott has donated nearly 100 percent of his salary to the community as funding for community events, according to the release. He regularly hosts luncheons for area senior citizens and pizza parties for children at the Youth Center, as well as community-wide cleanup days. He also organizes food drives.

Many area organizations have benefited from Abbott’s generosity and time. They include the Lions Club (for which he twice served as president), The Copper Muggers Club, Lansing Association for Retarded Citizens, Lan-Oak Park District, Lansing Women’s Association, Camp Quality, and Lansing Fraternal Order of Police.

A dedicated sports fan, Abbott sponsors a number of area teams, and has helped finance the Lansing High School baseball teams’ trips to state and national championship games. He also sponsors a local basketball tournament each year.

Kevin Steiner, president and chief executive officer of West Bend, presented the company’s Agent of the Year Award to Abbott.

“I was fortunate to meet Norm early in my career at West Bend. He always talked about consistently doing what’s right for our customers and behaving in a manner that develops trust and respect. Norm is a role model for other independent agents because he always conducts himself as a true professional. His leadership as an independent agent and his outstanding community service make him the perfect Mike Koehler award recipient.”

Kelly Tighe, West Bend vice president – Sales, agreed.

“We are very proud to honor Norm Abbott as our 2013 Mike Koehler Award winner. This is the highest honor West Bend can bestow on one of our agency partners, and Norm is a worthy recipient. He’s represented our company for more than 30 years with the highest level of integrity and honesty, while giving back to his community in an unparalleled way. We are all very proud Norm represents West Bend.”

In recognition of the award, West Bend donated $5,000 to the MACC Fund (Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer) in Abbott’s name.

The W.E. "Mike" Koehler Award honors Mike Koehler, an independent insurance agent and volunteer who, throughout his life, tirelessly served the insurance industry, independent agents' associations, and his community of Cedarburg, Wis.
