Jon DeVries, 18, is excited to be named 2013 valedictorian at Illiana Christian High School in Lansing.
The son of Jeff and Lora DeVries, of New Lenox, Ill., he maintains a 4.31 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale due to weighted grades and plans to attend Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich.
“I’m not positive yet, but I would like to study theater, music, and maybe even look into law,” DeVries said.
“I would love to work with live theater in some capacity, whether that means acting on stage, directing a show, managing a small theater group, teaching interested pupils, or all of the above.”
DeVries has acted in eight school productions at Illiana, including "Our Town," "Charlotte’s Web" and "Beauty and the Beast."
“I love the energy in drama. I enjoy the freedom you get to be goofy and to express yourself, and I love the friendships that this freedom has helped to create,” he said.
“I also love being able to share a story with an audience, especially when that story can demonstrate Christ. Theater has been a huge creative outlet for me. I would like to share the excitement that theater gives me with future generations.”
A members of the Chamber Singers at Illiana, DeVries is an alto saxophone player and a member of the wind ensemble, jazz and pep band.
He has participated on the Math Team for four years, and recently began playing tennis.
A member of New Life Church in New Lenox, DeVries enjoys reading, painting and spending time with his dog.
