Dyer resident Joe Ferguson is blazing a successful trail on his way to college.

A senior and valedictorian hopeful at Luther East High School in Lansing, Ferguson maintains a 4.38 grade point average on a scale of 4.0, due to weighted grades, and plans to attend Calvin College as a engineering or chemistry major.

“Joe is an overachiever from the word go and will succeed in whatever he does in life. LEHS will miss him and his work ethic tremendously next year,” English teacher Jan Kopischke said.

“He is a student who is always finished with his service hours before the start of the year, completing many of them over the summer, and most of them here at school with various projects,” she added.

During those projects, Ferguson set up for concerts and fundraisers, worked projection screens and helped with small jobs around the school.

“Service hours are to show that as a Christian school, we push the act of stewardship, where we help the community and others in a humble fashion. It shows love for the community and dedication,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson, a Boy Scout, also helped improve the school grounds for his Eagle Scout project his freshman year, tearing out landscaping, laying new gravel and planting bushes and a tree.

The son of Joseph and Nancy Ferguson, Joe serves as captain of the soccer team and was named the most valuable player last year. He also was captain of the volleyball team last year, again receiving the same award.

A trumpet player throughout high school, Ferguson is involved in school productions and performed as a bass with the Eagle Choir. He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansing and is employed by Gus Bock’s Ace Hardware.
