LANSING | The Lansing Junior Woman's Club is organizing a 5K walk-a-thon fundraiser in honor of Lance Cpl. Philip J Martini.

Martini died in 2006 while serving in Iraq with the United States Marine Corps. He was a Lansing native and Thornton Fractional South High School graduate.

Registration for the event can be done online at


Registration can also be done the day of the event and will begin at 8 a.m. Please note that if you register the day of the event, there will be a limited number of shirts available. The race will begin at 9 a.m. This will not be a timed event.

There are no animals, bicycles, skateboards, or roller skates allowed. Strollers are permitted.

Registration fees are:

Adults (12 and up)-$35

Children (5-12 yrs old)-$17.50

Under 5 is free (but will not receive a shirt)

Price includes T-shirt, bottle of water, and granola/energy bar.

Event takes place at Winterhoff Park in Lansing, at the corner of Roy and Madison streets. The race will begin and end at the Lance Cpl. Philip J Martini tree, which was planted in his honor. The funds raised will go toward upkeep of the Martini tree and the annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner organized by the club. For more information, call (708) 466-5503.
