LYNWOOD | A man is in custody after allegedly taking off in a Lynwood squad car and leading police on a brief chase through the village before wrecking the vehicle, police said.
Deputy Chief Terry Shubert said Lynwood police were called to assist another police department in locating a suspect wanted in a crime there late Monday or early Tuesday.
Shubert declined to name the department or elaborate on the crime.
Shubert said a Lynwood officer spotted a vehicle matching the description early morning and stopped the vehicle. As the officer approached the vehicle, another officer arrived at the scene to back him up.
A passenger in the suspect's vehicle fled on foot and a foot chase ensued, Shubert said. The passenger then got into a Lynwood squad car and drove off.
Shubert said the officers began a short pursuit on U.S. 30 and quickly apprehended the suspect when the car sustained undercarriage damage after driving over the median.
Shubert said the suspect is in police custody and charges are pending. The squad sustained "significant damage," Shubert said.
No other vehicles were damaged in the incident and no injuries were reported, Shubert said.
