A Munster man died Thursday after a multiple-vehicle crash on Interstate 290 near Elmhurst, authorities said.
Christopher Follett, 37, died at the scene of the crash about 2 p.m. Thursday on I-290, just east of St. Charles Road, according to Illinois State Police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The crash involved three semitrailers and four vehicles, police said.
Three other drivers were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, and three were treated by medics at the scene.
Follett was driving a red 2004 Chrysler sedan east when he and the drivers of a white 2013 International semitrailer and a orange 2009 Peterbilt semitrailer stopped because of traffic, Illinois State Police said.
A black 2016 Kenworth semitrailer failed to slow down and struck the back of Follett's car, police said.
Follett's car was forced into the back of the white International semitrailer, causing the semitrailer to hit the back of the orange Peterbilt.
The impact caused the international's trailer to veer into another lane, continuing the chain-reaction crash, police said.
All eastbound lanes of I-290 were shut down for more than 12 hours after the crash, police said.
The driver who struck Follett and another driver were cited for failure to reduce speed.
