A forecast for potentially record-breaking temperatures in the mid to upper 90s prompted some school closings and early dismissals Tuesday.

A full list of closings is available at http://www.nwi.com/closings.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for Lake, Porter, Laporte, Newton, Jasper, Benton, Cook and Will Counties for Tuesday. The statement includes a warning of a heat index in the upper 90s or 100.

The record high for Sept. 10 was set in 1983 when temperatures reached 95 degrees.

Forecasters are warning the heat can cause extra stress on young children, the elderly, those working outdoors, in hot buildings and on pets.
