Power has been restored to nearly all electric customers who lost power in the wake of Tuesday's storms, utility representatives said Wednesday afternoon.

Still, about 4,600 NIPSCO customers and more than 8,000 ComEd customers remained without power as of 9 p.m.

The lack of power — and air conditioning — came along with a National Weather Service heat advisory Wednesday for Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, Benton, Cook and Will counties, with temperatures expected to reach 100 and the heat index to peak at 105.

NIPSCO reported 60,000 of the 70,000 who initially lost power at the peak of the storms had power restored within 24 hours. Some 400 NIPSCO crews and contractors from surrounding states were working Wednesday to restore power to the remaining customers.

NIPSCO customers in Crown Point, Dyer, Griffith, Knox, Lake Station, Schererville and Valparaiso should expect to have power restored by Wednesday evening, the utility said.

Hammond, Highland, Hobart and Munster customers can expect to have power by Thursday morning, according to NIPSCO's website, and Merrillville and Portage customers should have power restored by Thursday night.

ComEd said some 9,000 customers in Cook and Will counties remained without power about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. The utility company estimates all customers should have power restored by late Thursday.

"ComEd continues to ramp up the number of crews to restore customers as quickly as possible," the company's website said. "With crews from neighboring states being mobilized to assist, the number of ComEd and contract crews will total just under 600 today to restore power as quickly and safely as possible."

Amanda Steeb, spokeswoman for Kankakee Valley REMC, said 1,000 customers remained without power Wednesday morning, primarily near Knox. Scattered outages remain in Valparaiso, Chesterton, Crown Point, Hebron, Kouts and North Judson, Steeb said.

Officials anticipate power will be restored to all Kankakee Valley REMC customers by day's end, Steeb said.

"Our crews continue to see a lot of downed power lines and broken poles throughout the system," Steeb said. "With damages of this sort, it takes extra time to assess the damage, remove debris and then begin the necessary work."
