SAUK VILLAGE | The Sauk Village Board approved an ordinance to levy $2.29 million in property taxes for 2013. The levy is 3 percent higher than last year.
Acting Mayor David Hanks was absent from the meeting, and Trustee Rosie Williams was appointed mayor pro tempore. Trustee Enoch Benson also was absent.
Williams declared a quorum, and the meeting continued.
The vote on approving the tax levy was unanimous.
A total of $515,000 of the levy will be appropriated for the Police Department, and another $515,000 for the Fire Department.
An additional $509,000 is appropriated for liability insurance for the village. A total of $180,000 is appropriated for corporate expenses, and $185,000 for the police pension fund.
The equalized assessed value of the village property is $85,817,778. That is a reduction of 3 percent from the previous EAV supplied by Cook County.
A lower EAV means that property values have decreased, and the amount of taxes levied against those properties is also decreased.
The board tabled the crime-free rental housing ordinance that was on the agenda.
Trustee Ed Meyers, chair of the Ordinance Committee, said he wanted to investigate some portions of the ordinance.
“I believe that there will be some small changes we want to make in the ordinance,” Meyers said. “We should be ready for the next board meeting.”
When it is approved, the crime-free housing ordinance will give landlords and village officials the power to break leases with renters who are habitual offenders.
The board also approved a motion to make Hub International the broker of record for workers compensation insurance with the village. Hub International was also the broker of record last year. The contract is a renewal at the same price.
Police and Fire Chief Alan Stoffregen told the board much needed repairs to police squad cars have been completed, and all of the cars have been outfitted with new tires. Stoffregen also said he was starting the process of hiring two new police officers for the village.
