SAUK VILLAGE | Village President David Hanks and the Village Board have a proposal that can save the village up to $43,000 monthly on the air strippers that clean the municipality's well water.
The proposal came in Monday afternoon from Schrader Inc., the company that supplies the air strippers to the village. Village Attorney Mike McGrath said that the proposal came in too late to be added to the board's agenda.
In the proposal, the village would purchase the two air strippers for $110,000. The monthly fees would then be lowered from the current cost of $55,000 to $12,000.
“The $12,000 is not for air strippers, it is for the infrastructure equipment to operate and support the strippers,” Hanks told the board. “We currently pay that, along with $43,000 for the actual strippers.”
The savings would alleviate some of the financial hardship the village budget has taken as a result of the well water problems.
Hanks also told the board that the village would be able to move $100,000 from the general fund back to the water fund. The village had to borrow money from the water fund last year to help defray the costs of the air strippers.
The board has scheduled a special meeting for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before the regular committee meeting at 7 to discuss and vote on the proposal.
“This is a good opportunity for the village to cut costs and save money,” Hanks said. “Plus it can be done without impacting the water treatment or the quality of the water.”
The board also announced that more than $500,000 in street repairs will be done this road construction season.
The work, which will repair and resurface roads, will be done with federal, state and county money, according to Hanks.
“None of the village funds will be used for these repairs,” Hanks said.
The roads to be done are:
* 223rd Street from Nichols Avenue to Murphy Avenue
* 215th Place from Peterson Avenue to Jeffrey Avenue
* Luella Court from 221st Street
* 225st Court from Theisen Avenue
* Merrill Court from 216th Street
* 223rd Place Court from Yates Avenue
The construction timeframe is from April through August.
A referendum will be on the April 9 ballot to ask voters to authorize the village to negotiate electrical rates for residents and small businesses. Two public hearings will be held to allow residents to ask questions and provide comments. The hearings will be at noon March 23 and at 7:30 p.m. April 2. Both hearings will be at the Municipal Center.
