The good news is plows and salt trucks have been out since early Monday morning. The bad news is the snow is only going to get worse as the day moves on.
Lake and Porter counties are under a winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. According to the National Weather Service, snow is expected to increase throughout the morning and transition to lake-effect snow in the early afternoon. Most areas are expected to get between 2 and 4 inches of accumulation with up to 6 inches possible in parts of northern Lake and Porter counties.
Cook County is under a winter weather advisory until noon, with accumulations of 2 to 4 inches possible.
LaPorte County is expected to see the worst of it, with a lake-effect snow advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Forecasters anticipate anywhere from 5 to 10 inches of snow may fall in LaPorte County by late Monday.
As of 6:45 a.m., Cook County reported an average snow accumulation of 2 inches. Schereville reported just .2 inches of snow overnight. Valparaiso had 1 inch of new snow and LaPorte reported 2.8 inches of snow overnight.
According to Indiana State Police, troopers responded to only a handful of slide-offs overnight on area expressways and the Toll Road. Illinois State Police reported similar conditions.
Local municipalities said road crews were out early treating roads and plowing.
The Indiana Department of Transportation said its crews have been working for two days treating roads in anticipation of the snow.
