SOUTH HOLLAND | Calumet City 2nd Ward Alderman Magdalena "Leni" Wosczynski is retiring from her post as director of senior transportation for Thornton Township after more than 30 years, according to a news release from the township.

Wosczynski oversaw development of the transportation program, which eventually became a fleet of 10 buses with its own garage and expanded senior transportation opportunities.

Seniors use the service for doctors appointments, grocery shopping, township events and field trips. Buses are ADA compliant and drivers are ADA certified in compliance with Thornton Township guidelines, the release states.

Ralph "Pete" Hawkins, the recently hired manager of transportation, will oversee the senior transportation department.

In 2012, more than 34,000 seniors used the township's bus service.
