The South Holland Community Center is a great third space for many, preceded by home and work. It's the social spot for some residents to gather with friends at the Conversation Cafe, engage in a competitive game of basketball, enjoy a brisk walk around the indoor track, or achieve weight loss and wellness goals in the fitness center.

This is the gathering place, the meetings space, and banquet facility for the community, and happens to be one of my favorite destinations. The 50,000-square-foot building, located at 501 E. 170th St., opened in July 2000. The facility provides spacious meeting rooms and administrative offices, a gym and fitness center, rim-flow pool and whirlpool, sauna and locker rooms, and preschool, media room, and kitchen.

South Holland’s Department of Recreational Services operates and maintains the center. They coordinate and manage all program offerings and social activities at the center, as well as provide banquet management and consultative services. The department also successfully manages a dynamic preschool program and fun summer day and sports camps.

On Sept. 3, the village of South Holland’s Recreational Services staff unveiled their latest center enhancement. Village President Don De Graff, along with Trustees Andrew Johnson, Larry DeYoung and Cindy Doorn-Nylen, and Recreational Services Director Ed Stewart, celebrated South Holland’s dedication to fitness with the re-opening of an improved fitness center. The fitness center received a complete makeover, much to the delight of its nearly 1,700 members.

South Holland’s fitness center is now lined with new advanced cardio and premium strength training equipment. The space dedicated to fitness is transformed into a room that will thrill seasoned members and attract newbies. During a series of tours, center staff engaged members in a demonstration of the new indoor cycling program. Indoor cycling uses a specialized stationary bicycle with a weighted flywheel. This is an organized workout led by an experienced instructor, designed to build endurance and strength. Cycling classes will be offered this fall at the Community Center.

The South Holland Community Center is the village’s hub. The center is about the people and their personal fitness and social needs. It’s about the village connecting with residents and residents connecting with friends. It’s about providing a great third space where members can be a part of their community. Visit South Holland’s website — www.southholland.org — for a full list of current and upcoming classes, programs and events.
