SOUTH HOLLAND | A Thornwood High School security guard died Thursday after trying to break up a fight between two students.

Richard Cowser, 54, of South Holland, was found unresponsive at the school and taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital, where he died at 1:33 p.m., the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday to determine a cause of death.

South Holland police said two security guards responded to a fight about noon between two girls in one of the hallways of the school. As the security guards were trying to break up the fight, Cowser fell against a school locker.

After the fall, Cowser was having trouble breathing and appeared to be in distress, police said. Paramedics were called to the school, and he was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital.

Glen Harston, a spokesman for the Thornton Township school district, said the school is cooperating with the police investigation. He said he was unsure what happened to the two girls involved in the fight.

South Holland Police Chief Gregory Baker said Cowser worked at the school through a private security company.

He said police are investigating the incident and are interviewing students who witnessed the fight.
