SOUTH HOLLAND | The Village Board has agreed to give Panera Bread an extra six months to open.

Chicago Bakery LLC, which is leading the Panera development, has requested a six-month extension on their original development plan. The original plan called for the bakery and restaurant to be completed at the end of 2012.

The extension has an estimated completion date of July 1.

“Development work continues at a steady pace,” Village Attorney Timothy Lapp told the board Monday night. “There has not been an issue with Panera continuing their work. It’s just a matter of needing a little more time.”

Trustee Larry DeYoung said Panera has applied for $1.8 million in building permits this month, proof that work is full speed ahead.

The board unanimously approved the ordinance.

In other village news:

• The board approved an ordinance allowing the Public Works Department to scrap or auction two vehicles that have been declared surplus. Public Works employees will look into the best way to liquidate the vehicles in the next two weeks.

• The village has taken over the property called the Chicago Southland Hotel at 17345 Halsted St. Using a no-cash bid policy, the village was able to take control of the property. They will work with local developers in an attempt to redevelop the land for business and/or commercial projects.

• The board agreed to allow the Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative to acquire bids for aggregate electrical purchases for the village. NIMEC has acquired bids for the village for four years. This particular bid will be for electricity to power the village street lights and water pumping stations.

• Hyman’s, a Chicago-based business since 1927, is interested in coming to South Holland. Owners want to open a business called E-Z Mix at 530 W. 172nd St.

Hyman’s has requested a Class 6B tax resolution on the property to help defray development costs.

The board conditionally approved the tax request based on property and business development by Hyman’s.
