SOUTH HOLLAND | South Suburban College’s student literary art publication, The Scriblerian, has been informed that it won several awards for excellence in publication from the American Scholastic Press Association and from the Associated Collegiate Press.
The Scriblerian received a “First Place with Special Merit” award from the ASPA scoring 965 out of a possible 1,000 points in judging categories of Content, Organization, Design, Presentation, and Creativity. The organization commented, “The Scriblerian is an amazing publication ... you have published excellent works from your school population. The Scriblerian is a model for those up-and-coming magazines and inspiration for those magazines that haven’t quite aced the necessary skills.” The ASPA also awarded the magazine a “Best Art” award for student Sherri Valentine’s “Dear Deer” artwork.
The Scriblerian’s faculty adviser Rick Jones said, “This is quite an honor to win these two awards, especially the Best Art award, which we had not won since the mid-'90s. I have an excellent group of students who work with me on the magazine throughout the year, reading and critiquing material that students submit. “
Jones is an English instructor at SSC who has served as the adviser to the student group responsible for The Scriblerian — The New Scriblerus Society — for the past 23 years. Jones added, “This past year, I had one of the best editors I have ever had the opportunity to work with, Tyler Arnold. She is an outstanding student and did a great job editing the material so that my layout editor, Paul Braun, and I could put the magazine together for publication.”
Additionally, The Scriblerian was recognized with a “Second Class” rating by the ACP, scoring 437 out of 550 points. This year marks the 33rd anniversary of The Scriblerian.
