Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter on Monday announced the promotion of Sgt. Mike Young to the rank of lieutenant to serve as LaPorte District commander for the Indiana Toll Road.

The district covers Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, LaGrange and Steuben counties.

Young was appointed to the department in December 1990 and assigned to the Toll Road, where he worked Lake and Porter counties for 12 years before being promoted to corporal.

He was promoted to sergeant in 2005, covering Lake, Porter, LaPorte, St. Joseph and Elkhart counties.

Young has worked as a field training officer for new recruits and a drug recognition expert. He also served on the North Zone Emergency Response Team for 12 years.

Young, a Steuben County native and graduate of Prairie Heights High School, lives in Porter County with his family.
