STEGER | On Nov. 3, the Bloom Trail Blazer Navy Junior ROTC drill team finished third in their first drill meet of the season, which included 12 teams from various high schools throughout Illinois.
The individual events included armed, color guard, and unarmed regulation which requires all the schools to follow the same drill routine in addition to a uniform inspection required for all participants. The schools also perform an armed and an unarmed exhibition routine that included creativity on the part of the cadets.
The first year cadets also perform an assigned routine which is not included in the team scoring. The individual events at this particular meet are divided into two divisions based on the size of the unit. Bloom Trail’s unit being less than 300 cadets places them in the small division. I
n addition to the overall third place the cadets from Bloom Trail got first in the color guard and armed regulation, second in the armed exhibition and third in unarmed exhibition. Individual awards included Melissa Churchill finishing eighth in unarmed knockout and third in armed knockout and Jessica Fleckinger getting second in unarmed knockout. The team will attend drill camp and compete again in the Westinghouse Open at Westinghouse High School on Dec. 1.
