STEGER | The cadets from Bloom Trail Navy Junior ROTC started off the school year with their first community service project at the Manteno Veterans Home on Aug. 17.

It is an annual event and the 40 cadets from Trail volunteer to push the veterans to various games, food stands and other events at the home. They also run errands and help provide meals for the veterans who are unable to leave their rooms.

The young people get an opportunity to speak with veterans who served in World War II, Korea and other periods in American history. Their effort is not only appreciated by the veterans and nursing home staff but many of the families are in attendance as well.

The unit is available for community service projects throughout the area. If you need volunteer help for your organization contact Cmdr. Tim Crawford at (708) 758-7000, ext. 3240 or
