STEGER | For the second consecutive season, the drill team from Bloom Trail High School completed their best season ever.

Last year they finished fifth at the Area Three West Drill Meet. This year’s third-place finish proves the unit is on an upswing, said retired Cmdr. Timothy Crawford, senior naval science instructor at the Steger high school. Area Three includes every Navy Junior ROTC unit in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Nebraska totaling more than 60 units. The event is held at the same drill hall which is used for boot camp graduation at the Naval Station Great Lakes north of Chicago.

The meet not only tests the unit's ability to march but also an academic exam, fitness competition and personnel inspection are scored as well. The team placed second in the unarmed regulation and third in the armed regulation competition which is the competition where all units perform the same routine. In the exhibition routines where the units design their own drill sequence the unit placed fourth in both armed and unarmed. The physical fitness team also placed fourth in their event while the color guard finished fifth. This meet ends a long season for the Blazers which began last November at the Zion Benton Invitational.

The unit thanks the local community for their continued support, Crawford said.
