STEGER | On Sept. 29 at Bloom Trail High School field house, 13 Junior ROTC from Illinois and Michigan representing three separate branches of the service competed in the annual fitness meet.
The event consists of a dodge ball, volleyball, and tug of war tournament as well as a push-up and sit-up contest ending with a relay race. The cadets from Trail won first place in the relay race, finished third in the dodge ball tournament and finished fourth overall. Teams consist of 12 cadets and the teams must have a gender mix of eight male and four female members.
A team from Zion Benton Township High School in Zion, Ill., won the meet with Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Ill., finishing a close second.
The meet is held every year in honor of a former cadet from Bloom Trail NJROTC unit who passed away in a tragic chain of events two summers ago. Danielle Dennis-Towne was the unit’s cadet commanding officer during her senior year at Trail before her tragic death. Her family was on hand to say a few words about Danielle’s life and present awards.
