THORNTON | A Chicago man jumped to his death Tuesday afternoon after driving through a locked gate at the Thornton Quarry, police said.

The 31-year-old man drove his vehicle over the edge of the quarry, but it fell only a short distance onto a service road, officials said. The man then got out of the vehicle and jumped, Thornton Police Chief Doug Beckman said.

A witness called police after seeing the man drive through the gate near Margaret and Hubbard streets, Beckman said.

Police arrived and found the man's vehicle on the service road, he said.

Police searched on foot for the man with help from a helicopter. Searchers found his body within 20 to 30 minutes, Beckman said.

Cook County medical examiner's office investigators pronounced the man dead at the scene at 3:39 p.m., a spokesman said. An autopsy is planned for Wednesday.

The death remained under investigation Tuesday night, Beckman said.
